The Virgen de los Dolores of Las Torres de Cotillas represents an example of the revival of Murcian religious sculpture by the hand of González Moreno (12/04/2019)

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, titular image of the homonymous processional Brotherhood of Las Torres de Cotillas carved in 1942 by the famous Murcian sculptor of Aljucer Juan González Moreno (1908-1996), illustrates the poster announcing the local Easter this year and it is an example of the artist's desire to revive religious sculpture in the region by revitalizing the salzillesque patterns in a combination of classicism and innovative avant-garde to give birth to the concept that solvent critics define as "Mediterranean".

The Virgen de los Dolores of Las Torres de Cotillas is a work of maturity by González Moreno, a reference of modern Murcian imagery, showing a suffering that is internalized in an aesthetic demonstration of contemporary borders visible in the size of the hair and the tension of first line visual planes reinforced with a successful polychrome.

The painful image develops a very accentuated linear rhythm, in accordance with its processional purpose, tracing a symbiosis of spaces described by the gaze of the Virgin and hands that concentrate an inner strength presided over by suffering.

In a word, a Virgin that awakens since 1957 that devotion of men and women of a penitential Torrena Brotherhood that have given and give the best of themselves in an enthusiastic expression of faith, hope, teamwork, motivation and devotion providing this massive push of popular religiosity, culture, splendor, art on the street and stamp of identity that is currently our Holy Week.

Congratulations and luck in what you always undertake.
