Rolled parties: the float parade (04/08/2019)

Together with the participatory and cheerful spirit of Peñas, comparsas and other local associations, in the splendor of such massive events in our municipality of Las Torres de Cotillas, such as their traditional parades and rallies in the festivities, the Three Kings Parade and the Carnival - as ancestral as other expressions of brand and identity of the Villa- is the display of art, colorful and varied theme embedded in stone cardboard (Huertano costumbrismo or mythological apotheosis to a large extent) offered by floats that travel the main streets of the population walking to the beautiful festive queens, the Scratch of the day or Their Majesties of the East in a profusion of originality, category and creativity.

These rolling oropeles, most often huge tractor trailers or platforms pulled by smaller displacement vehicles, are pieces of exquisite creation that have given and give quality, in addition to popular festivals, to the Burial of the Sardine - brimming with pagan motives -, to the Bando de la Huerta -equipped with cardboard, foliage and branches- and to the recovered Battle of the Flowers -which in its initial years had as its decoration natural flowers on albardín or esparto basto-.

In the first third of the twentieth century, the great painters of our land such as Joaquín, Luis Garay, Clemente Cantos or Pedro Flores, or sculptors like Nicolás Ramón designed and directed even the entire process of building party floats.

After the Civil War, the profession of the bodybuilder takes shape, with jobs that have been requested not only in the area of our Region but throughout Spain.

There we have the examples of extraordinary artisans of stone cardboard that triumph in the breadth of the national geography as Conte - with his remembered workshop opened until 1983 at the Orihuela Gate of the City of Murcia, in front of the old Condomina Stadium-, Carlos Gómez, Nicolás, Muñoz and Esteban, among others.

These teachers have left thousands and thousands of sketches, cardboard molds and creations of remarkable emotional and sentimental load to the heritage of all Murcia.
