The municipality of Las Torres de Cotillas distinguished on Saturday June 23 to Onofre Garcia as his 'Huertano del Año 2018', recognizing his dedication to the ethnographic tradition and culture of the municipality.
This distinction was made official during the ingrained 'Tribute to the huertano' that was celebrated in the place of the Huertano of the municipality, presided over by the mayoress, Isabel Maria Zapata.
After the opening of the act that was run by the popular Torreño poet Salvador Sandoval, we proceeded -as every year- to the offering of a laurel wreath in the monument to the huertano.
"It is a recognition of our roots, a beautiful gesture that we make every year to those people who have been shaping the town we are today," said Zapata, who made the dedication with Garcia, who turns 100 in September.
Later, the activity was transferred to the social center of the San Pedro neighborhood, which is already heated to enjoy its patron saint festivities.
In the act collaborated the ethnographic group 'Vergel de Murcia', which offered a sample of regional music and dances;
the local amateur theater group 'Tejuba', which starred in a work of Huerta style;
and the popular panochist Fernando González Marquina, better known as 'Nando Er Tristán'.
