In the area of Las Torres de Cotillas, since the beginning of the seventeenth century there was already a constancy in the town of a brotherhood dedicated to worshiping the souls of Purgatory that, according to Christian theology, are in sin and therefore forced to do penance to be able to directly access the heavenly dimension.
That is why it is understood that the blessed souls are those indicated to intercede for the benefit of these sinners and that would be done through the sacrifice and prayer of the living.
From the fifteenth century the Church promoted this cult in addition to the veneration of the Eucharist and Santa Maria.
In our town of Torrena, the Brotherhood of the Blessed Souls was, together with that of the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Rosary (sponsored by the Dominican friars of the Region of Murcia), the referents of religious associations created by the very Moorish population -not negligible- , settled mainly in the agricultural areas of the municipality.
We speak of three Torrena brotherhoods that also had a significant heritage of goods from donations testamentary both their own members and individuals outside the institution that make their contributions for spiritual graces received and / or for indulgences that are granted to the soul of the deceased .
A list of properties of the brotherhoods Torrena is published by, for example, the Official Gazette of the Province of Murcia, the current BORM, in its edition corresponding to April 27, 1853 and whose pages contained a total of 89 Irrigation tahúllas (Ánimas, 46, Rosario, 27, and Santísimo Sacramento, 16) that, distributed in 25 farms and with a patrimonial value of almost 80,000 reales de vellón, reported them a year rent of another 2,000 for rent and benefits of harvests, destined to cover charitable, social, educated attention on specific dates and in acts derived from the death of the brothers (whether they were prayers, burials and similar) or investments in works and ditches.
The law of confiscation that in 1855 launched the former Minister of Finance Pascual Madoz in order to declare "the sale of all rustic and urban properties, censuses and forums belonging to the State, the clergy, orders military of Santiago, Alcántara, Calatrava, Montesa and San Juan de Jerusalén, the pious works and sanctuaries, the own and common of the towns, to the charity, to the public instruction, and any others belonging to dead hands and their exit to public auction ", would end this patrimony of land of the brotherhoods Torrena.
