The archaeological exhibition of Roman remains in Las Torres de Cotillas, closer (23/11/2018)

The City of Las Torres de Cotillas has presented today Friday November 23 the project of study and cataloging of archaeological pieces found decades ago in the district of La Loma, mainly of Roman origin.

"This document will be sent to the Directorate General of Cultural Assets, dependent on the Ministry of Culture, to request the transfer of this heritage and with it create an archaeological exhibition in the municipality", explains the Councilor for Culture, Pedro Cabrera, who remembers that a commission composed of associations and people of relevance in the cultural field of the municipality was created to manage this issue.

"It consists of more than 100 pieces dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, which come from a spa, a villa and a necropolis, among which are utensils such as amphoras, vases, falcatas and even human remains," says the In charge of the project, heritage technician and art historian, Álvaro Hernández.

For January

Once the Ministry reviews the project and gives its approval, the House of Culture 'Pedro Serna' will host the exhibition with these pieces that are currently in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia.

"By law, in principle the sample will be held for 6 months renewable, until we can turn it into a permanent exhibition," says the mayor.

"This is a slow process, in which there are administrative steps that are not always as fast as we would like, but we must give them well and we are on the verge of these remains returning to Las Torres de Cotillas," says Cabrera.

"The objective is to reconstruct and value the past three thousand years of the municipality with this center of archaeological reference that we hope will be launched throughout the month of January and whose facilities are ready, in the absence of the remains," says Hernández .

He will be the curator of this temporary exhibition that will be titled 'Ab initio: Las Torres de Cotillas, a past three thousand years' and will also have previous remains of other cultures, such as Iberian or Argaric, dated in 1000 BC.

A sample for which free guided tours are planned through the Department of Culture, the development of a guide on these remains, cycles of conferences and related activities.

"Another objective of this project is to improve the security and conservation of the pieces, the study of which has led us to presume that there was an important Roman settlement in the area, from a set of luxury villas to the existence of a small 'civitas'', says Álvaro Hernández, who says that if it were excavated in the area, this point could be confirmed and "it would be an important cultural change for Las Torres de Cotillas".
