The City of Las Torres de Cotillas, which participates in the regional surveillance system for the tiger mosquito, continues adopting measures to control this insect in the municipality.
The tiger mosquito (aedes albopicuts) is an invasive exotic mosquito detected for the first time in the Region of Murcia in 2011 and is competent for the transmission of several viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika.
Thus, the City Council - through the concessionaire of the municipal potable water service - is going to distribute an information brochure so that residents adopt measures to prevent the proliferation of light bulbs in their homes.
These brochures will be distributed with the next potable water supply service bill and will also be available on the web for those who are interested.
In particular properties
The tiger mosquito, being an insect with low mobility and that requires small amounts of water for its reproduction, has its breeding foci in particular properties with small reservoirs of water (patios, gardens, etc.).
Therefore, citizen awareness is essential at the time of control, in addition to the traps placed by the City Council in gardens to detect the presence of this insect and its distribution.
The appearance of this mosquito species is included in the Plan of Action for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES) as one of the consequences of climate change and its control is included as an adaptation measure of this initiative, approved in January of this year.
