Las Torres de Cotillas City Council has shown its support for the suicide prevention campaign launched by the Spanish Confederation of Mental Health.
"Suicides are the main external cause of mortality in Spain, doubling deaths from traffic accidents, and each suicide affects, intimately and deeply, at least 6 people," explains Mayor Torreño, Joaquín Vela Fernández, which affects that Suicidal behavior "is linked to a very high degree of suffering of the person."
"In 2017, 3,679 people died, of which 3 out of 4 were men," said Councilor for Health and Sports, Alberta Martínez Vázquez, who remembers that today, September 10, is the world day for suicide prevention.
"We must put our grain of sand, from the City Council and as individuals, to work in the prevention of these situations," says the mayor.
Among other measures, the campaign proposes to enhance the visibility of people with mental health problems and achieve media collaboration by providing responsible and adequate information on this issue, as well as increasing mental health guidance and the urgent development of a National Bread of Suicide Prevention.
"We have to end the myths, stigma and guilt to make it easier for people with suicidal ideations to ask for help without feeling that they are doing something wrong," explains the mayor.
