The City of Las Torres de Cotillas participates in the Regional Monitoring System of the Tigre mosquito, with several traps placed in the gardens of the municipality to detect the presence of this insect and its distribution.
This mosquito is competent for the transmission of several viruses, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika.
"The proliferation of mosquitoes in the municipality is due to the fact that, with the rains and subsequent days of high temperatures, there has been a simultaneous hatching of eggs located in already dry locations, and that in most cases they are not associated with currents of water, but rather to small containers and cavities spread throughout the territory, "explains the Councilor for the Environment, Francisco Fernández Baño.
In this sense, the contracted services of DDD (disinfection deratization and disinfection) since May are carrying out treatments of possible nests in public areas, treatment of foci detected in private areas, as well as investigation of new foci.
The detection of these is very difficult, since most of them are in private areas, coinciding in many of them in plots or uninhabited or second-residence dwellings.
Therefore, it is important to remind the public that the recommendations made in May should be extreme through the information leaflet that accompanied the water bill, as small accumulations of water are the most frequent foci of the tiger mosquito.
"Fumigation treatments are not the solution to the problem, since they only eliminate adult mosquitoes that are in the treatment area, and at the time of treatment. However, due to the high proliferation in areas of large public influx (such as parks and gardens) its treatment has begun gradually since early morning. In addition, citizen awareness is essential at the time of its control, its main habitat is the courtyards, gardens or small spaces with small water reservoirs, "he explains the Councilor for Health Protection, Alberta Martínez Vázquez.
To enhance the collaboration of citizens with this problem, the City Council will distribute an information leaflet through the concessionaire of the drinking water service so that the neighbors adopt measures that prevent the proliferation of outbreaks in their homes.
This material will accompany the next supply service invoice and will also be available on the web for those who are interested.
