The IES Florida of Las Torres de Cotillas will participate for the second consecutive year in the final of the national phase of the contest 'Science in Action', held in Alcoy from October 4 to 6.
On this occasion he does it with the work 'The measurement of the Earth', carried out by students of 3 ° ESO, who will have for the displacement and stay in the Alicante town of the collaboration of the City of Torreño and the company Fripozo , seated in the locality.
This contest aims to present science in an attractive and motivating way, so that young people and the general public are interested in it.
"The IES Florida has taken advantage of the fifth centenary of the Magellan and Elcano expedition that for the first time made a complete tour of our planet to see how mathematics has been an essential element of progress in the history of human beings," explains the Councilor for Education, Rafael Martínez García.
The project, coordinated by the professor of the department of mathematics Iria Vidal, is developed in eight lines of work: the expedition of Magellan and Elcano, Eratosthenes measures the Earth, the lines of the Earth, the geographical coordinates, the celestial coordinates, instruments of navigation, workshop of capes and knots, and cartography or how to crush the sphere.
At international level
This contest, which is international with scope in Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries, is aimed at professors, students, professors, researchers and disseminators of the scientific community, and is organized, among others, by the Higher Council for Scientific Research ( CSIC), the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) and the National University of Distance Education (UNED).
