The IES Florida of Las Torres de Cotillas achieved an honorable mention in the final of the national phase of the contest 'Science in Action', which was held this past weekend in Alcoy.
Students of 3rd grade of ESO presented the work 'The measurement of the Earth', a project coordinated by the professor of the department of mathematics Iria Vidal, which is developed in eight areas of work: the expedition of Magellan and Elcano, Eratóstenes measures Earth, Earth lines, geographic coordinates, celestial coordinates, navigation instruments, workshop of capes and knots, and cartography or how to crush the sphere.
"It is a pride that for the second consecutive year our representatives have reached this stage and repeated the honorable mention," explains the Councilor for Education, Rafael Martínez García, who accompanied the Torreño expedition on his trip to Alcoy and remembers that in This experience the schoolchildren had the collaboration of the Torreño City Council and the Fripozo company, located in the town.
"The IES Florida took advantage of the fifth centenary of the Magellan and Elcano expedition, which for the first time made a complete tour of our planet, to see how mathematics has been an essential element of progress in the history of human beings," he says. the concilor.
Another honorable mention
In addition to the IES project, the Torreña representation achieved another honorable mention in this contest, whose main objective is to present science in an attractive and motivating way, so that young people and the general public are interested in it.
It was for Iván García Vidal, 7-year-old student of CEIP Maestro Jesús Ferrer, who presented the work 'Mercury in my pocket' in the 'Adopt a Star: Research in Astronomy' modality.
This contest, which is international with scope in Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries, is aimed at professors, students, professors, researchers and disseminators of the scientific community, and is organized, among others, by the Higher Council for Scientific Research ( CSIC), the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) and the National University of Distance Education (UNED).
