"We urgently need to provide a solution to the excess of rainwater in the extraordinary episodes of rain because our sewage plant is overcome to treat that amount of water. That solution is the construction of a storm tank."

This is expressed by the mayor of Las Torres de Cotillas, Joaquín Vela Fernández, who met on Thursday, January 23 with the president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), Mario Urrea, to address this problem.

"Our WWTP has a specific and limited pumping capacity, and needs a storm tank at its entrance to, in extreme situations, collect and store the most heavily loaded rainwater, in order to be treated and minimize possible spills to public channel, "says Mayor Torreño.

This infrastructure has been in the process of being awarded by ESAMUR for more than a year, a process to which Mayor Torreño asks for speed and also a complement.

"We need to expedite the procedures to have the tank as soon as possible because it will correct some problems before which, in addition, the General Directorate of Water must make other investments in hydraulic infrastructures in the municipality to solve the problems of spills," says Vela Fernández, for whose government team it is "a firm commitment to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly policies".

Last episode

This meeting also dealt with the last discharge of water from the WWTP of Las Torres de Cotillas to the Segura River, which occurred during the DANA last October and before which the CHS took samples to open a sanction file.

"As of today, nothing has been officially communicated to us about the instruction of that procedure. We have contacted the Wastewater Sanitation and Purification Entity of the Region of Murcia (ESAMUR) and they have confirmed that the analytical results of the sample collected on October 22 did not violate the limit values ​​set in the regulations, "explains the mayor.
