It was presented last Thursday, February 13 by Juan Antonio Ortega, director of the pediatric unit of Environmental Health of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital.

The City Council of Las Torres de Cotillas will launch in the municipality the social innovation project 'Walking to school: a model for social innovation in health and environment'.

This initiative aims to "return children to the street, as was done in other times, and recover the sustainable displacement that such healthy results brought to our society," said Mayor Torreño, Joaquín Vela Fernández, who advances that the main The idea is to encourage active transport to school using non-motorized means, such as cycling, skateboarding or walking.

This program, developed by the Department of Health and Sports and Education, was presented in the municipality last Thursday, February 13 by Juan Antonio Ortega, director of the pediatric unit of Environmental Health of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital.

This event was attended by members of the local educational community, technical staff of the City Council, members of local associations and members of the local government team, with the first mayor in the lead.

"This proposal has two main objectives: to convert Las Torres de Cotillas into the municipality with the lowest childhood obesity in Spain in 5 years and improve the air quality and school environments where children play, study and spend their time," says Ortega .

Various advantages

"This project, which is endorsed by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), proposes several clear advantages among the members of the educational community: reduce cardiovascular risk, prevent obesity, decrease sedentary lifestyle and increase motivation and sense of belonging to the group, improve the emotional state and academic performance, strengthen family and community relations, and improve the urban environment, since lower use of the car reduces CO2 emissions, "explains the mayor.

To do this, Torreño City Council will work on the urban design of school environments to facilitate these healthy habits.

"In addition, we seek that our neighbors change their mobility habits, get involved and become aware that the use of sustainable displacement is necessary, starting with the daily work of having their children go to school," said the mayor.
