The tradition of the Burning of the Scratch of Las Torres de Cotillas is today a massive celebration, consolidated and clear ethnographic reference- that, running in the Esplanade of the Master Ángel Palazón, on the last Sunday of the month of August, serves as a finishing touch and brooch Apotheosis of the festivities of the municipality.
Listed as a purifying ceremony, it has a double inspiration: the Christian, to see in the fire the auspicious element with which to destroy the evil past upon which the present renovator of the soul is built, projecting an idea of ​​life and health, of transformation, regeneration, amendment or death of the old man victim of sin and the birth in his place of the new man redeemed by faith;
and the pagan, endowed with that mentality -which goes back to the night of the times- where the fire came from the Sun, from which she was her representative on the earth, from him she would see the strength emerge to facilitate the growth of the crops and, consequently, the welfare of men and animals.
And, speaking of crops, in Las Torres de Cotillas, just a century ago a town that lived on grapes, the festivities, as highlighted by the Official Chronicler of the Villa Ricardo Montes in his historical research work "Around the vine and the party of "El Raspajo" in Las Torres de Cotillas (1450-1914), revolved around this fruit at that time since they occurred after the harvest, in the first half of October - until 1969, that moved to the dates of August - being the central act of the celebration offering the first must of the collection to Our Lady of Salceda.
A Burning of the Scratch of a magical, spiritual and transcendent nature that recreates, rescues a memorable past that defines not a few aspects of the identity of our municipality.
Therefore, considering this milestone as a clear cultural, religious, ethnological and tourist manifestation of unquestionable category and remarkable regional impact, a unique and relevant event as a focus of attraction for neighbors and visitors.
And, bearing in mind also the traditional roots, diversity and peculiar and defined character of an event that dates back to 1882, as evidenced by the historical documents that, relative to this matter, are preserved today, the town hall of the town, At the initiative of a recent plenary motion signed by councilors of its Municipal Corporation, the competent Regional Government Department is requested to declare such a Fiesta event of both Regional Tourist Interest and Tourism Excellence.
