The young athlete Torreño Sergio Jornet signed an extraordinary debut this past weekend with the absolute Spanish selection of heptathlon.
The athlete of the club "UCAM Cartagena" closed a great performance in the international meeting that was disputed in Prague (Czech Republic), improving his personal record totaling 5,095 points and improving his registrations in three of the tests of the competition (60 Meters fences, height and 1,000 meters).
"And he has achieved by making history, since he exceeded by a hundredth with 8.38 the mark that in 1988 obtained in the 60 meters hurdles a legend of the combined tests, Murcia Antonio Peñalver," says the councilor of Physical Activity and Sports Torreño, Ginés Pérez, who congratulates Sergio "for his continuous achievements and for giving that special reputation to the municipality of Las Torres de Cotillas".
The meeting was held on 28 and 29 January with the French team, with France, Great Britain, Poland and host.
In it the Torreño finished in a meritorious 17th place in the competition, being responsible for the triumph of Spain next to Jonay Jordán, Mario Arancón and the winner of the encounter, a Jorge Ureña that shattered its own record of absolute Spain (6,249 points).
Sergio - who turns 21 this year - was accompanied in Prague by his coach and technical director of the Federation of Athletics of the Region of Murcia (FAMU), Patricia Paz, in addition to his father and his personal doctor, Javier González.
"In addition to his achievements, it is important to emphasize his great discipline, which allows him to compete as well as lead his daily life without the diabetes that was diagnosed at age 11 is an obstacle", explains Torreño.
Best Murcia promise
Jornet, who last November was chosen as "Best male athlete of the year" by the FAMU, despite his young age with a very wide range.

There he took the silver medal in the category of decathlon.
