The group Torreño "Vergel" sings "the Mayo" in its traditional spring exaltation (29/04/2010)

For eighteen years, "Ethnographic Group Vergel de Murcia" de Las Torres de Cotillas has remained alive in the town Torreño a tradition of ancient times: the singing of "Mayo."

A practice that this year will take place tomorrow, Friday April 30th through the streets of the town, as usual, "when after 21 hours of training Torrena sing their songs in the parish of Our Lady of Salceda and begin the journey that will take the streets Campo, Prince and Enrique Granados.

"The Mayo" are ancient songs that were interpreted to mark the arrival of good weather and good harvests.

Originally, the "Mayo" was a pagan celebration, but over the years and mainly into the twentieth century, the party was "Christianizing" little by little until it became a celebration of thanksgiving.

Thus, these "Mays" Christianized start with a hymn to beauty and femininity of the Virgin and from there to the girls of the village.

With these songs, the "Group Ethnographic Vergel de Murcia" is also inviting residents of The Towers of Cotillas to continue the tradition of hanging crosses of flowers in the windows.

"Do you sing or pray?"

According to tradition, generally, were the men of the people who went out to walk the streets of the town.

As they approached a house to sing should ask "is sung or pray?".

If you answered "it says" it was understood that the family was in mourning or someone was sick inside, but if you answered "singing", the crew tore sang the "mayo" which extolled the beauty of the Virgin and adjudicated by "May" to her husband St. Joseph.

It is also traditional in these "Mays", men end up singing Jacks or partying in the houses of neighbors to end up being invited to a bit of anise or sweet wine to warm.
